SLAFAR is a non-profit oriented voluntary organization formed by scientists, academics, technologists, developers, and entrepreneurs to address issues related to the utilization, management, and governance of fisheries and aquatic resources and associated ecosystems in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1994, and its current membership constitutes over 250 members. SLAFAR is affiliated to Asian Fisheries Society, thus owns distinct identity in the Asian Region.

Objectives:

  1. To promote effective interaction and co-operation among those involved in research and development activities in fisheries and aquatic resources in Sri Lanka.
  2. To liaise and co-operate with government and non-governmental organizations concerned in such activities in Sri Lanka.
  3. To create and propagate an awareness of the importance and the ways of sound utilization, cultivation, conservation and development of aquatic resources in Sri Lanka.
  4. To serve as a forum for scientists and other personnel to discuss issues and policies related to development and conservation of aquatic resources.

In order to achieve its objectives, SLAFAR

  • Annually publishes the Sri Lanka Journal of Aquatic Sciences, which is the only internationally recognized and regularly published journal related to fisheries and aquatic resources in Sri Lanka; [The journal is documented into the international cataloging indexes such as FAO Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) and Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.]
  • Organizes guest lectures, awareness programmes, seminars, workshops, panel discussions , demonstration on the current topics related to the fisheries and aquatic resources to school children, teachers and undergraduates, fishers fish farmers, fish vendors, aquaculturists, ornamental fish breeders, fisheries inspectors, policy makers, etc.;
  • Collates and compiles scientific publications on fisheries and aquatic resources in Sri Lanka and publishes newsletters and brochures;
  • Conducts resource surveys and provides on-site training to fish farmers and aquaculturists.
